China has been enraged by the recent report of the US Department of Defense (Pentagon) regarding India-China relations. The report said that China wants to take advantage of the easing of tensions along the LAC with India to stabilize bilateral relations and prevent US-India relations from strengthening further.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said in a press briefing on Thursday (December 25) that China opposes the Pentagon’s comments regarding its national defense policy. He also clarified that China views its relations with India from a strategic and long-term perspective. When Lian was asked whether China would try to stall US-India relations by taking advantage of the reduced tension with India in the disputed border areas? On this he said that China emphasizes on developing relations with India and not on targeting any third country.
Chinese Foreign Ministry retaliated
According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, China is ready to strengthen communication with India, enhance mutual trust and move bilateral relations towards stable, healthy and sustainable development. Let us tell you that this statement of China has come in the context of Pentagon’s ‘Military and Security Developments Involving the People’s Republic of China’ report, in which it has been said that after the tension on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) has reduced, China is trying to stabilize relations with India, so that the deepening of the strategic alliance between India and America can be prevented.
In the Pentagon report, Arunachal Pradesh has been described as important as China’s core interests (Taiwan and the South Sea). Apart from this, China’s growing military relations with Pakistan have also been mentioned.
How are India-China relations now?
Border tensions between India and China have decreased in recent months. After the meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in October 2024, the two countries started high-level talks on border management. Steps like direct flights, visa facility and Kailash Mansarovar Yatra have been taken.
