China has inaugurated the world’s longest Tianshan Shengli Tunnel in Xinjiang province and opened it to the general public. This tunnel is about 22.13 kilometers long and passes under the Central Tianshan mountain located in the Uyghur region of northwest China.
According to Song Hailiang, Chairman of China Communications Construction Company, this tunnel has created two world records. He said that this is the longest expressway tunnel in the world and it has the deepest vertical shaft compared to any highway tunnel.
How China’s new Tianshan Shengli Tunnel will make travel easier
- The Tianshan Shengli Tunnel, which passes through the central Tianshan Mountains in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, has reduced the difficult and long journey through mountainous terrain from several hours to about 20 minutes.
- According to the government news agency Xinhua, this tunnel is a major part of the G0711 Urumqi-Yuli Expressway, which became operational on Friday (December 26, 2025).
- This expressway will serve as an important transport artery linking city clusters to the north and south of Xinjiang.
- The world’s longest tunnel, spanning about 2,500 kilometers, is located in the Tianshan mountain range in central Xinjiang and separates the provincial capital Urumqi from Korla.
- With the opening of the expressway, the travel time between Urumqi and Korla has reduced from about 7 hours to about three to three and a half hours.
- This new engineering achievement of China passes through 16 major geological fault zones.
- This more than 22 kilometer long tunnel passes through the Tianshan mountain range, where earlier the journey used to take several hours, now the same journey is completed in just 20 minutes.
- China started the construction work of this entire project in the year 2020. It has been completed at a cost of about 6.6 billion US dollars.
