China’s ruling Communist Party will discuss the next five-year plan, the impact of US President Donald Trump’s tariff war and the ongoing anti-corruption crackdown in the military at its three-day annual leadership meeting. Apart from the current economic situation, the changing global strategic environment is expected to be discussed in the plenary meeting of the 370-member body comprising senior party leaders from across the country.
In this meeting, Trump’s efforts to expand the US role in establishing a ceasefire to end the hostage crisis in Gaza and to put pressure on Russia to end the Ukraine war will also be discussed.
These issues will be discussed in the three-day meeting
According to an earlier official announcement, the Plenary Session to be held behind closed doors in Beijing from October 20-23 will discuss key issues related to the formulation of the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030) for national economic and social development.
Discussions on the new five-year plan were expected to take into account the ongoing slowdown in the world’s second-largest economy, stagnation in domestic consumption, excess capacity of new productive forces, especially mass-produced e-vehicles, and the impact of Trump’s tariffs and export restrictions on them.
Talks on expulsion of top generals also
Apart from the slowdown, Chinese President Xi Jinping has stepped up his sweeping anti-corruption campaign in the military by expelling two top generals ahead of a plenum, sparking speculation of a ‘purge’ in the party.
China’s Defense Ministry spokesman, Colonel Zhang Xiaogang, said that in addition to the two top generals, seven former senior military officers have also been expelled from the CPC and the army. The seven expelled officers were three-star generals who held key positions in the army.
Issues raised in SCO summit will also be discussed
In recent speeches, Chinese President Xi Jinping has been asking the party to take a forward-looking approach and consider the impact on China of the changing international landscape in the backdrop of Trump’s tariff war on China and other countries.
The plenary meeting is also expected to discuss the developments of the past few weeks, during which China hosted the SCO summit in Tianjin from August 31 to September 1, which was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
