China’s Dalian Polytechnic University recently decided to expel a student, as she was allegedly found guilty of having a physical relationship with a foreign Ukrainian e-Sports player Danilo Teeslackon (aka Jius). According to the university, the conduct of the student was violated by citizen’s morality and it has damaged the national dignity and school.

This decision has become a cause of debate on China’s social media platforms. During the e-Sports tournament in Shanghai on 16 December, Jius posted a video on his Telegram channel. In the video, he was seen in a hotel room with a Chinese woman. The woman feels that her video is being made, but there is no clear sexual behavior in the video. Jeeus later deleted the video and apologized, but by then the screenshot and recording had gone viral. This video provoked the sensitivity related to national dignity in China.

Social debate on expulsion
Many social media users and legal experts questioned the action of Dalian Polytechnic University, in which the university publicly embarrassed the girl’s full name. Professor Jhao Hong, law of Peking University, said that if the national dignity has been hurt, then she is not a woman, whose privacy rights have been violated. The commenters also questioned that the accused are not punished such a severe punishment in the cases of rape or sexual harassment in the campus.

University rules and civil ethics
According to Dalian Polytechnic University, students whose inappropriate contact with foreigners can be punished on the basis of circumstances. This rule is clearly made in the name of protecting national dignity and school reputation, but critics argue that this rule reflects unclear and patriarchal thinking. There is a violation of personal freedom and privacy in modern social structure.
