Before the elections to be held on two Rajya Sabha seats in Haryana on March 16, Congress has taken all its MLAs to Shimla. A meeting of MLAs was held today (March 13) at the house of Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda in Chandigarh. Except about five MLAs from the meeting, they left for Himachal Pradesh in two small tourist buses and some private vehicles. Congress MLA Aditya Surjewala said that all the MLAs are united but in Himachal, there will be training for the MLAs on how to vote. He said that all the MLAs will now come on March 16 and will directly reach the assembly to vote.

Two Rajya Sabha seats are falling vacant from Haryana. But there are three candidates in the fray. BJP has fielded Sanjay Bhatia and Congress has fielded Karmaveer Singh Boudh. These seats have become vacant due to the end of the tenure of BJP’s Rajya Sabha MPs Kiran Chaudhary and Ram Chander Jangra. BJP leader Satish Nandal also filed nomination as an independent candidate, making the contest interesting. Now three candidates are in the fray for two seats, so the election may be tough.

Sanjay Bhatia is considered close to Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. He has long experience of organizational politics and has also been associated with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. How strong a candidate is Satish Nandal?
Satish Nandal has previously been the leader of the Indian National Lok Dal and is considered a political rival of Bhupendra Singh Hooda. He had contested elections against Hooda from Garhi Sampla-Kiloi assembly seat in 2009, 2014 and 2019, but could not win.
To win a Rajya Sabha seat in the 90-member Haryana Assembly, 31 votes are required. At present, BJP has the support of 48 MLAs, including three independents, while Congress has 37 MLAs. The election has become more interesting with the entry of Nandal as an independent candidate.
