Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday (January 18) laid the foundation stone of the Rs 6,957 crore Kaziranga Elevated Corridor project in Assam’s Nagaon district and flagged off two Amrit Bharat Express trains digitally. PM Modi, who arrived here from Guwahati on the last leg of his two-day visit to Assam, took part in the ‘bhoomi pujan’ of the Kaziranga project.
PM Modi also inspected a model of Kaziranga Elevated Corridor. The Prime Minister also flagged off two Amrit Bharat Express trains Dibrugarh-Gomti Nagar (Lucknow) and Kamakhya-Rohtak through digital medium. An official said these trains will significantly improve long-distance rail connectivity between Assam and various states like West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Haryana, reduce travel time, and provide modern passenger amenities.

‘Assam used to get very less budget during Congress rule’
PM Modi said that the biggest pain of North East has always been distance. Distance of hearts, distance of places. For decades, the people here kept feeling that the country’s development was happening somewhere else and they were being left behind. Its impact was not only on the economy but also on trust. We worked to change this feeling. He said that the work of connecting Assam through roadways, railways, airways and waterways started simultaneously but Congress never cared about it. When the Congress government was at the Centre, Assam got a very less railway budget, about Rs 2000 crore. Now the BJP government has increased it to about Rs 10,000 crore annually.
What did PM say about rhino hunting?
PM Modi said that there has been a continuous increase in the number of tourists in Kaziranga in the last few years. Local youth have got new sources of income through home stays, guide services, transportation, handicrafts and small businesses. Today I would especially praise you people of Assam and the government here for one more thing. There was a time when incidents of rhino poaching in Kaziranga had become the biggest concern of Assam. Dozens of one-horned rhinos were killed in 2013-14. The BJP government had decided that we will not let this happen, this will not happen now. After this we strengthened the security system afresh.
Targeted regarding BMC elections
PM Modi said that today the voter of the country wants good governance, wants development, he focuses on both development and heritage, hence he likes BJP. There is another message from these elections. The country is continuously rejecting the negative politics of Congress, in the city of Mumbai where Congress was born, it has today become the fourth or fifth number party.
He said that the moments spent in Kaziranga two years ago are among the most special experiences of my life. I had the opportunity to stay overnight in Kaziranga National Park and during the elephant safari the next morning, I experienced the beauty of the region very closely. I always get a different pleasure by coming to Assam. This land is the land of heroes, the land of sons and daughters who have shown their talent in every field.
