The absence of Bihar MLAs in Congress programs and the proposals made by the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) have given further fuel to the idea that the already weak opposition may face an even bigger blow.
The speculation gained further momentum after three Congress MLAs remained absent from an important party meeting last week, while none of these six MLAs attended the traditional ‘Dahi-Chuda’ banquet organized by the state Congress unit on the eve of Makar Sankranti.
Chirag Paswan’s leader claims, Congress MLA in touch with NDA
According to reports, leaders of the ruling Janata Dal-United are in touch with Congress MLAs and defection may be announced soon. Adding further fuel to the rumours, Lok Janshakti Party-Ram Vilas leader Sanjay Kumar claimed that all 6 Congress MLAs are in touch with the ruling NDA and will switch parties after Makar Sankranti (celebrated on Wednesday).
This speculation has come just two months after the NDA’s landslide victory in the Bihar Assembly elections, where it defeated the opposition Grand Alliance by winning 202 out of 243 seats. The analysis points to three possible outcomes.
Political decline of Congress in Bihar?
The first case is that all the 6 MLAs change parties, due to which Congress will cease to exist in the Assembly and its symbolic decline will occur in Bihar. Additionally, there is also the possibility of partial defection, which would be enough to trigger an official split under anti-defection rules, thereby weakening but not completely destroying the Congress.
However, in the absence of confirmation, there is also a possibility of status quo where the MLAs will remain, but continued speculation will further weaken the party’s credibility. In any case, the opposition faction of the Grand Alliance, which has already been marginalized in the assembly elections, will now become even more weak.
