Controversy over the name of IPL, court case filed against BCCI, you will be shocked to know the decision of the court.

Before the start of IPL 2026, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has got a sigh of relief. In the petition against BCCI, it was said that it was using the name ‘Indian Premier League’ illegally, but the Kerala High Court has rejected the petition considering this claim as baseless.

Petitioner Ashiq Karoth had argued that the use of this name by BCCI is not legal. The bench of Chief Justice Soumen Sen and Justice Shyam Kumar VM quipped that there is no merit in this argument and the petitioner is remembering after such a long time that the Indian Premier League is not an official tournament of India.

What argument did the petitioner give?

Petitioner Ashiq Karauth is a resident of Ernakulam, Kerala, who said that the use of the name ‘IPL’ by BCCI is wrong and he has realized after many years that IPL is not an official tournament of the country. He directly objected to the word ‘Indian’ in the name of the league. But the court called this argument completely baseless.

The Indian Premier League was started in 2008 and today after 19 years it is one of the biggest sports leagues in the world. The controversy over the name of ‘IPL’ would have meant it would have become a topic of discussion all over the world and the negative impact on IPL could have been harmful for BCCI. In such a situation, it can be said that a big danger has been averted.

The first match of IPL 2026 will be played between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 28. BCCI has not yet released the complete schedule of the league.
