Cough Syrup Sale Ban Without Prescription: For some time now, the government has been taking big and tough decisions regarding medicines, be it recently banning the high dose of Nimoslide medicine or taking tough decisions for it after the death of children due to cough syrup some time back. Now, taking a big step towards ensuring the safety of the people, the government has prepared to tighten the over-the-counter sale of cough syrup. For this, the government has issued a draft notification of amendment in the Drugs Rules, 1945. The Health Ministry has proposed to remove the word syrup from Schedule-K. According to the Health Ministry, this step has been taken to make the rules related to medicines more clear and effective, so that public interest can be protected in a better way. Objections and suggestions have been sought from the general public on this draft within 30 days.
What does the central government say?
The notification issued by the Central Government states, “These rules will be called the Drugs (Amendment) Rules, 2025. These rules will come into force from the date of publication in the Official Gazette. In Schedule-K under the Drugs Rules, 1945, serial number 13, under entry number 7 in the ‘Class of Drugs’ column, the word ‘syrup’ will be deleted.” The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has clarified that this draft has been issued under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. The Central Government will consider all the objections and suggestions received within the stipulated time limit, this proposal has been prepared after consultation with the Drugs Technical Advisory Board.
“In exercise of the powers conferred under Sections 12 and 33 of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, this draft notification amending the Drugs Rules, 1945, after consultation with the Drugs Technical Advisory Board, is being published for the information of the general public. It will be considered after a period of 30 days,” the notification said. Let us tell you that in this schedule only those medicines are included, which are exempted from some strict rules for sale. Apart from this, no doctor’s prescription or prescription is required to buy it.
What do experts say?
Dr. Santosh Kumar, director and pediatrician of Sanjeevani Hospital, Darbhanga, termed this decision as the need of the hour. He said that “Syrup or liquid medicines are used more in children, but these medicines are also misused the most. Many times syrups are given in the right quantity and without doctor’s advice, which can be harmful for children. If such medicines are available only on doctor’s prescription, then the habit of taking medicines on their own will reduce.”
