LP.8.1 was first detected in July 2024. Then the scientists had told that this is the sub-program of Omikron’s KP.1.1.3, whose cases have been seen earlier. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in January 2025, LP.8.1 was categorized as ‘variant under monitoring’. Omikron and its sub-workers infect people by dodging the body’s immunity power easily. However, Omikron is not considered to spread more serious diseases.

How much damage can the new variant cause

According to experts, the spike protein of lp.8.1 has 6 mutations, on the basis of this scientists believe that it can be more easily bind than our cells. It has seen a mutation named V445R which gives it the ability to spread more easily than the rest of the variants.

V445R can damage lung cells. Initial reports have shown that the symptoms of LP.8.1 are not more serious than the rest of the sub-workers, so it is not being considered more dangerous at the moment.
