Does Cow Milk Increase Intelligence In Children: A statement by Rajasthan Education Minister Madan Dilawar recently created controversy. During the ‘Cow-Promotion and Cow-charming’ program organized in Kota district, he claimed that desi cow’s milk increases the intelligence and energy of children, while buffalo’s milk makes them lethargic and weak. He also gave an example to explain his claim. Let us tell you its truth.
What do experts say about this?
As soon as the minister’s statement came out, a debate broke out on social media. According to the report of thecsrjournal, experts clearly say that there is no scientific evidence that proves that cow’s milk increases the intelligence of children more than buffalo’s milk. Experts have expressed doubts on these things. He says that till now there is no solid scientific evidence available to prove that cow’s milk has a better effect on the intelligence of children than buffalo’s milk. It is definitely believed that buffalo milk has high fat content, which can be around 6 to 15 percent, hence it is high in calories. Apart from this, a little more protein, calcium and vitamin B12 are also found in it, which are essential nutrients for many important functions of the body. However, these digestion-related differences have not been linked to any obvious difference in the mental abilities of children.
What is the difference?
As far as understanding the difference in nutrition is concerned, some people choose cow’s milk to consume less calories. But this decision is related to the body’s metabolism, not brain development. Nutrition experts associated with Delhi-based National Diabetes, Obesity and Cholesterol Foundation say that an element like iodine, which plays an important role in brain development, depends more on the diet of the milk-yielding animal than on its breed. That means, whether it is cow or buffalo, the amount of iodine in milk depends on what is fed to it.
Cow’s milk advice at an early age
Dr. Sudha said in a video shared on social media that children below one year of age should not be given milk of both cow and buffalo. If the child is one year old or older then he should be given cow’s milk, this is because it was considered light and easily digestible. Apart from this, it is better to give buffalo milk to the child when he is two years old. But recent scientific studies have not proved that choosing cow’s milk instead of buffalo’s milk improves the intellectual ability of children.
