Can A Blood Test Detect Cancer Early: Cancer cases are increasing rapidly all over the world, the biggest reason behind this is that its symptoms are not visible quickly. This is revealed after conducting various types of tests. However, now a simple blood test can detect cancer at that time in the future. In fact, scientists have developed a highly sensitive light-based sensor, which can detect very minute amounts of cancer biomarkers present in the blood, down to sub-atomolar levels. This means that the presence of only a few molecules may be sufficient for testing. Let us tell you what has been discovered regarding this and how this technology works.

How does it work?

According to the study published in the journal Optica, researchers led by Professor Han Zhang of Shenzhen University created this system by combining DNA nanostructures, quantum dots, CRISPR gene-editing technology and an optical technique called second harmonic generation. This technique was able to identify cancer-related microRNAs in the patient’s blood with greater sensitivity than traditional RT-qPCR.

How are investigations conducted now?

Currently, most initial tests are based either on imaging, which shows a tumor once it has reached a certain size, or on techniques such as PCR, which measure genetic material by multiplying it. New technology is different from these two. It does not require any chemical amplification. As soon as a cancer biomarker is present, there is a direct change in the light signal and this becomes the basis of the test.

Small RNA molecules control genes

This sensor especially focuses on microRNAs. These small RNA molecules control genes. MicroRNAs like miR-21, miR-155 and miR-10b have been found to be associated with the early stages of lung cancer. Their quantity is very less in the initial stage, hence extraordinary sensitivity is required to catch them. In the lab, the device could detect miR-21 even at very low concentrations of up to 168 zeptomolar, which is just a few dozen molecules in a typical sample. A thin layer of molybdenum disulfide was used in it, which is known for SHG signal.

Experts believe that if microRNA can be detected before tumor formation, then the method of cancer screening can change. In the future, it may also be useful in identifying other cancers, viral infections, bacterial diseases and even neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s.
