It is described in the Shrimad Bhagwat Purana and many religious and mythology that in the Dwapar Yuga, Kanha was very dear to Makhan-Mishri in childhood. In order to steal the Makhan, he used to go to Gokul’s houses with friends and broke the mats and eat with friends.

Gopians of Gokul were disturbed by Krishna’s mischief, after which they started keeping Matki at a height. Then Krishna used to break the matki like a human pyramid and eat Makhan.

The festival of Dahi Handi is a lively festival of this naughty and love of Premamayi Balleela, which fills everyone’s heart with devotion and joy.

Krishna’s Leela is known as Dahi Handi festival today, breaking the matki in many hair pastimes. This festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm, gaiety and joy.

In many cities, this festival is also organized in the form of competition. The participant participating in the competition is called Gopala. The group of Gopala and Govinda together forms a team and on the day of Dahi Handi, they prepare the human pyramid and break the matki.

As soon as the matki breaks, the Makhan filled in the handi falls down and ‘Govinda Ala Re Ala,’ starts echoing. Dahi Handi is a religious festival as well as a symbol of teamwork, hard work, enthusiasm and patience.

Religious belief is that Makhan, which has fallen from Dahi Handi, is a symbol of happiness, prosperity and auspiciousness, which Govinda’s team accepts like Prasad.
