The song ‘Damadam Mast Kalander’ was written by Sufi poet Amir Khusro in honor of Baba Lal Shahbaz Kalandar. Lal Shahbaz Kalandar is the famous Dargah in Sindh province of Sindh province of Pakistan.

‘Damadam Mast Kalandar’ means, every breath, funny fakir i.e. Kalandar. It was composed in Lal Shahbaz Kalander’s address. Later, some lines were also added by Baba Bulleshah.

Lal Shahbaz Kalandar is Jhulelal Kalander. The real name of Sufi philosopher and Sant Lal Shahbaz Kalander, who lives in Sehvan, Pakistan, was Syed Muhammad Usman Marwandi. It is said that he used to wear red clothes, so red was added to his name.

It is believed that Shahbaz Kalandar is a rebirth of Jhulelal, the popular saint of Hindus of Sindh province. Kalander was knowledgeable from Pashto, Persian, Türkiye, Arabic, Sindhi and Sanskrit.

It is said that in Pakistan, the situation used to visit the Dargah of Lal Shahbaz. One reason for the huge crowd of people of every religion at his dargah is that Shahbaz Kalandar used to put more emphasis on the condition of the heart than the rituals and says that ‘whatever you want to do, do it with heart’
