Dark Dining: In the last few years, a unique dining trend has become famous all over the world. The name of this trend is dark dining. In this, people eat food in the restaurant with their eyes blindfolded. The idea behind this experience is quite simple but powerful. Let us know which country started it first and what was the reason for it.

What is dark dining?

It’s about a restaurant experience where diners can’t see the food they’re eating. Its purpose is to shift the focus away from the appearance of the food and focus only on the taste, texture, aroma and feeling. When our eyes cannot see anything, our brain itself focuses more on the other senses. That’s why even familiar foods may taste completely different.

Eating food without looking at it also brings changes in the mutual behavior of people. When people can’t see each other, conversations seem more open, warm and personal. This is why dark dining is called not just food but also an emotional experience.

Who provides food?

Employees in dark dining restaurants are blind or visually impaired. Now that they are already used to navigating environments without sight they can guide diners safely and confidently. This system not only makes the food experience different but also creates employment opportunities for blind or visually impaired people.

Where did dark dining start?

Dark dining first started in Europe. In fact, it first appeared in France in 1993 during an awareness exhibition named Dialogue in the Dark. Inspired by this incident, the world’s first Dining in the Dark restaurant opened in Zurich, Switzerland in 1999. After this, in 2004, a similar restaurant was opened in Paris and along with this, there are similar restaurants in Bhopal and Bangalore, India too.

Why did it start?

Dark dining was not started just to provide a new and modern restaurant experience. Actually its idea is associated with a deep social message. George Spielmann, a blind priest from Switzerland, used to serve food to guests while blindfolded. This is to help them understand how visually impaired people experience the world. The guests loved this experience and the idea eventually transformed into dark dining.

Its objective is to generate sympathy towards visually impaired people. At the same time, it aims to show that blindness does not limit abilities. At the same time, after this initiative, new employment opportunities have also been created for visually impaired people.
