Dark Liquor: Many people believe that darker spirits like whiskey, rum, brandy or red wine make you more intoxicated than lighter spirits like vodka, gin or white wine. But scientifically this is not correct. Actually, the color of the drink does not decide how drunk you will be, but the amount of alcohol decides this.

alcohol content

The intensity of intoxication is completely determined by the percentage of alcohol present in the drink. A drink with 40% alcohol will give you the same intoxication whether it is dark whiskey or clear vodka. Your blood alcohol concentration determines how drunk you are. For this reason, Scotch whiskey with 40% ABV is no more intoxicating than colorless white whiskey of the same strength.

What is inside dark liquor?

The difference in dark liquor is the presence of congeners. It is a natural chemical byproduct formed during fermentation and aging. This byproduct gives dark liquor its dark color, deep aroma, and strong flavor. In all these, the level of congeners is much higher than in light drinks.

hangover effect

Congeners in dark alcohol can make your hangover worse. Studies show that drinks with high congener levels, such as bourbon or red wine, cause severe headaches and dehydration the next morning.

Why is this misunderstanding?

In fact, old spirits often have deep flavor, strong aroma and heaviness. Because of this it makes one feel stronger. Combining this with a worse hangover, many people assume that they are overintoxicated. Whereas in reality the percentage of alcohol is the only factor that determines excessive intoxication. Whether the drink is clear or dark, your level of intoxication depends entirely on how much alcohol your body absorbs. Drink fast, drink on an empty stomach or drink alcohol with high ABV. You will get intoxicated according to the amount of alcohol. This proves that dark liquor does not make you too intoxicated. That just makes your hangover worse.
