One of these traditions is still played in some parts of Assam, where when a girl first gets periods, she is married to a tree. This is not a story but a truth that has been going on for generations.

Where is this tradition played?
This unique tradition is played in Boganigaon, Solmari village in the district of Assam state. This tradition is called Tolini Biah in the local language. This is a cultural and traditional custom, which the people there still play with great faith and respect. This marriage is seen as a ritual, in which the girl is prepared for social and mentally changes.

When a girl gets periods for the first time, the people there consider that time as a new beginning of her life. This is a big change, and it is believed that this ritual is performed to see this change as purity. At this time the girl is kept separate from the house for a few days. He is neither allowed to get out in the sun, nor is it allowed to live with the rest of the family members. It usually lasts for 3 to 5 days.

Which tree is married?
A few days after the period, a girl is married to a banana tree. This marriage is like a common marriage. In which the house is decorated, there are songs and music, relatives and villagers gather, the girl is decorated and the banana tree is prepared as a groom. This ritual is symbolic and is considered to be the first marriage of the girl. Family members are fully involved in this wedding and celebrate it as a big celebration. During this time, the special thing is that the girl has to follow certain rules, such as just eating fruits and staying away from the sun. However, this marriage from a banana tree is not a real marriage, but a traditional ritual.

What is the reason behind this tradition
There is also a belief behind this tradition that this marriage is done for the long life of her husband’s husband to protect the girl from evil eyes and her husband’s husband. Some people also believe that such rituals are the way to respect the changes in women’s body. However, in today’s era, many people also question this tradition, but many families of the village still play it as part of their culture.
