‘Deal harshly’, 5 Hindus killed in Bangladesh in one month, India’s Mohammad Yunus rebuked

For the last few months, Hindus have been facing atrocities under the rule of the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus in Bangladesh. India on Friday (January 9, 2026) asked Bangladesh to strictly control the communal incidents happening there. India has issued this statement after the incidents of killing of many Hindus and brutality against women in Bangladesh in the last few weeks.

Bangladesh should deal strictly with communal incidents: MEA

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, ‘We are witnessing a worrying trend of repeated attacks by extremists on minorities as well as their homes and businesses. It is necessary to deal with such communal incidents immediately and strictly. We have seen a worrying trend of linking such incidents to personal enmity, political differences or external reasons. He said, ‘Such neglect emboldens criminals and deepens the feeling of fear and insecurity among minorities.’

Communal violence increases before elections in Bangladesh

As the date of general elections approaches in Bangladesh, incidents of communal violence are increasing. After last year’s coup, the interim government of Mohammad Yunus has failed to establish a normal environment. Former Bangladesh Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina has said that the foundation of India-Bangladesh relations is so strong that it will withstand even the current difficult times.

Tension increased in India-Bangladesh relations

Tension in India-Bangladesh relations has increased following incidents of increasing attacks on Hindu minorities and targeting of Indian diplomatic missions in Bangladesh during the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus. Elections are proposed in the country on February 12, but the security situation is continuously worsening and conflict between political parties is also increasing. India also rejected the alleged ‘anti-India false narrative’ being spread in Bangladesh and said that it is the responsibility of the Yunus government to maintain law and order and ensure security.
