Sachin Dev Burman was born on 1 October 1906 in Bengal Presidency. He belonged to the royal family of Tripura. His mother Princess Nirmala Devi was the princess of Manipur and his father MRN Dev Burman was the son of the Maharaja of Tripura. S.D. Burman was the youngest of nine siblings. He had a keen interest in music since childhood.
S. D. Burman completed his studies from Kolkata University and obtained BA degree from there. After completing his studies, he entered the world of music and joined Kolkata Radio Station as a singer in 1932. From here his career progressed slowly. Initially he gave music in Bengali films and then moved to Mumbai, where he started making his mark in Hindi films.
Started the real innings after coming to Mumbai
After coming to Mumbai, he got the opportunity to give music for the first time in the films ‘Shikari’ and ‘Aath Din’. After this his fame grew rapidly and he gave many memorable songs for Hindi films. His specialty was that he used to make the songs unique by creating a beautiful mixture of classical and folk music. Movies like ‘Guide’, ‘Pyaasa’, ‘Bandini’, ‘Sujata’, ‘Abhiman’ are great examples of his musical talent.

S. Along with music, some interesting stories were also associated with D. Burman’s life. A similar incident happened between him and Sahir Ludhianvi during the film ‘Pyaasa’. There was a dispute between the two regarding the songs of this film as to who had more creativity in the songs.
Sahir S. He demanded from D. Burman that he should be paid one rupee more, because he believed that his contribution in the popularity of the song was equal. S. D. Burman did not accept Sahir’s demand and hence both of them never worked together after this. This small quarrel is still remembered as an interesting story in the industry.
S. D. Burman’s personal life was as interesting as his musical journey. He was very fond of football and also of food. Along with this, he was very cautious about his expenses and people in the industry used to laugh at him by calling him a miser. Sometimes there used to be minor differences between him and Lata Mangeshkar, but his son R. D. Burman later reconciled the two.
On 31 October 1975, S. D. Burman passed away, but his music is still alive. In his memory, the Tripura government gives the Sachin Dev Burman Memorial Award every year and in the year 2007, a postal stamp was also issued in his honour.
