In the winter session of Parliament, the country’s Defense Minister Rajnath Singh discussed the national song Vande Mataram on Monday (December 8, 2025). He said, “Today, when we are celebrating the 150th year of Vande Mataram, we have to accept the truth that the justice that should have been done was not done. Today in independent India, the national anthem and the national song should have got equal status, out of which one got a place in the mainstream, but the other song was fragmented and marginalized. It was seen as an extra.”
During Rajnath Singh’s address in the Lok Sabha, when a member interrupted him, the Defense Minister got enraged and reprimanded him severely. He said, “In 1937, Congress had decided to break the song. All generations should know about the political deceit and injustice done to Vande Mataram. Now returning the glory of Vande Mataram is the need of the hour and also a demand of morality. Despite this injustice, the importance of Vande Mataram could not diminish. It has become a form of life.”

Vande Mataram became the immortal song of national spirit – Rajnath
Rajnath Singh in the Lok Sabha said, “Vande Mataram is complete in itself, but an attempt was made to make it incomplete. It has become the immortal song of national spirit and it will remain so forever, no power can diminish it. The injustice done to Vande Mataram was not an isolated incident, it was the politics of appeasement, which was adopted by the Congress and the politics led to the division of the country and weakened the unity over communal harmony after independence.”
He said, “Today we are restoring the dignity of Vande Mataram, but some people may try to create a narrative that a wall is being built between Vande Mataram and Jana Gana, such an attempt shows a divisive mentality. Vande Mataram and Jana Gana Mana are the cries, two eyes, of the two sons of Mother India. Both Vande Mataram and Jana Gana Mana are national pride.”

He said, “Those who neither understand the origin of civilization, those who neither accept the importance of culture, those who ignored traditions, they neither could understand earlier nor are able to understand now. This celebration of the anniversary is not a show, it is a pledge to give proper respect to Vande Mataram. Today we have to correct this mistake. We have to get rid of political prejudice. Some people found Anandmath communal.”
He said, “Vande Mataram and Anandmath were never against Islam. These lines of Vande Mataram seemed communal and political because they were looking through the lens of Jinnah. These lines of Vande Mataram symbolize the soul of India.”
