Amid the political debate over pollution in Delhi, sarcasm and counter-sarcasm have emerged on the ‘Vipassana’ meditation method. On December 14, Aam Aadmi Party chief and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal termed Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s remarks as inappropriate and said that the ancient technique of meditation should not be mocked.
Let us tell you that while sharing the video of her speech given in a program last week, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta explained her vision to deal with pollution. He said that his government is finding a solution to the problem while living and working in Delhi. At the same time, Rekha took a dig at Kejriwal and said that she would not “run away” from Delhi to practice ‘Vipassana’ to cure her cough. He also added that work is being done with the spirit of “My Delhi, My Responsibility” and the solution to the problem will also be found here in Delhi. Along with the post, the Chief Minister claimed that both short-term and long-term measures are being implemented to control pollution.
Kejriwal’s reaction and context of ‘Vipassana’
Responding to Rekha Gupta’s comments, Arvind Kejriwal gave a strong message on social media platform ‘X’. He wrote that political enmity is a different matter, but ridiculing the ‘Vipassana’ meditation method taught by Lord Buddha in this way does not suit a Chief Minister. According to PTI, Kejriwal said that making fun of this method of meditation is not only inappropriate but also shows insensitivity towards spiritual tradition. He stressed that regardless of any political differences, a person holding public office should use restrained language.
Politics, responsibility and impact of message
Kejriwal further said that doing ‘Vipassana’ is not about running away, rather it is achieved only by fortunate people and it brings immense peace. He also urged Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to practice ‘Vipassana’ herself. This entire episode has raised questions on the direction of political dialogue on a serious issue like pollution in Delhi. While on one hand the government is talking about its measures and responsibility, on the other hand controversy seems to be increasing regarding the choice of words and cultural references.
