The capital Delhi today on Sunday (January 11) witnessed the coldest day of this entire season. The cold became so severe that people started their morning shivering. The minimum temperature recorded in Ayanagar area was 2.9 degrees Celsius, which is the lowest level so far this winter. The cold morning air was so harsh that even breathing seemed difficult and people were seen avoiding leaving their homes.
According to the Meteorological Department, the temperature in many parts of Delhi went much below normal. The minimum temperature was recorded at 3 degrees in Palam, 4.8 degrees in Safdarjung and 3.7 degrees Celsius in the Ridge area. The cold wave that has been going on for the last few days was seen in its most intense form today, which gripped the entire Delhi-NCR.
Yellow alert issued for cold wave
India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert of cold wave for today and tomorrow. Meteorologists say that due to snowfall and rain in the Himalayan regions, extremely cold winds are coming towards the plains from the north-west. This is the reason why the night and morning temperatures in Delhi have fallen rapidly.
Trouble increased due to fog
There was dense fog in Safdarjung area in the morning, due to which visibility reduced to about 500 meters. This also affected the traffic and people faced difficulty in going to office, school and other important works. The elderly and children had to face the most problems due to cold and fog.
The weather department and administration have appealed to the people to be cautious. It is being advised to wear warm clothes, take help of bonfire or heater and avoid going out unnecessarily in the morning and evening.
The Meteorological Department estimates that this cold wave may continue for the next one or two days. After this, some relief is expected with a slight increase in temperature. At present, Delhiites will have to keep themselves fully prepared for this harsh winter.
