The Delhi government has decided to make a big change in the administrative structure of the capital. Now Delhi will have 13 districts instead of 11. Along with this, the boundaries and names of the existing districts will also be reshuffled. This decision has been taken with the aim of administrative reforms, better coordination between departments and ensuring rapid redressal of public grievances.
Small districts, fast functioning
The government believes that due to small size of districts, the functioning will be faster and the monitoring system will be strong. So far, many times there have been disputes between different departments over boundaries, but after the new districts and boundaries are fixed, such disputes will end. The public will also get relief because now they will be able to take all their complaints directly to the District Officer (DM).
DM will get more powers
In the new structure, the District Magistrate will be given powers like district officials of other states. This means that now the Nodal officers of Delhi Jal Board, PWD, Social Welfare Department and other important departments will be present in the DM office itself. This will not only improve the coordination, but the public will not have to cut the rounds of different offices.
Changes in districts and names
There is a plan to make the Municipal Corporation (MCD) zone a new district in Delhi. Currently there are 12 zones in Delhi, which will be reorganized as districts. Due to this process, the names and geographical location of some existing districts may change. It is believed that Shahdara district may end, while south and south-east districts can also be brought in a new form. Similarly, changes in the names and boundaries of outer Delhi and north-west district are also likely.
Public benefits
After the creation of new districts, the public is expected to have the biggest benefit, they will be able to reach the administration. The accountability of officers in every district will be decided and the functioning will be accelerated. Due to small districts, monitoring of services like health, education, water and roads will be easy.
Forward procedure
The Delhi government has prepared a proposal for this decision. Now it will be notified after the cabinet approval and the consent of the Lieutenant Governor. After this, the formation of two new districts will be formally applicable.
