Delhi Politics: On the occasion of World Health Day, Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee President Devendra Yadav has fiercely targeted the BJP’s double engine government for the health system. He said that for the last 12 years in Delhi, neither the previous Kejriwal government nor the current BJP government has managed to save the lives of the people. While presenting shocking figures, Yadav claimed that 20 newborns are dying every day in Delhi, which highlights the plight of health facilities.
‘7439 newborns die, rising mortality worrying’
Devendra Yadav, citing the report released on World Health Day, said that 7439 newborns died in Delhi in 2023, including 4439 boys and 2995 girls. He said that 7419 of these deaths occurred in hospitals, which raise questions on the government health system. Yadav said, “The lack of malnutrition, pneumonia, septicemia and NICU is the main reasons. Government hospitals do not have emergency cesarean surgery, outborn NICU and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Due to lack of medicines, poor mother and infants are not treated on time.
‘Comparison and reality distance with America’
Yadav lashed out at the BJP and said that the government compares the country to the US to make economic superpower, but the situation is frightening in terms of health. “5-6 newborns die per 1000 living births in America, while this rate is much higher in Delhi. The destruction of the health system in the world’s largest democracy is the biggest failure of the BJP.”
‘Things worse in four years’
Presenting the figures for the last four years, the Congress leader said that the mortality rate of newborns is continuously increasing. 6145 deaths (20.37%) in 2020, 6413 deaths (23.60%) in 2021, 7155 deaths (23.82%) in 2022 and 7439 deaths (23.61%) were recorded in 2023. He raised the question that despite claims to increase health budget, why are the situation not improving?
‘Not even medicines in big hospitals’
Yadav alleged, “Out of 178 essential medicines in Delhi Cancer Hospital, there are no more than 100 stocks. The cancer patients do not even get 20-30 thousand medicines. The BJP, which beats the drum of Ayushman Yojana, should first fix the hospitals of Delhi.” He claimed that treatment of every disease was free under Congress rule, but now patients have to buy medicines from outside.
‘Double engine claim hollow’
Devendra Yadav said that the BJP, which exposed the failures of the previous government on the plight of the health sector, did not make any improvement itself. The government of double engine has completely failed to repair the health system. This is a deception of the people of Delhi.
