Why is Goddess Lakshmi worshiped on Dhanteras?

According to the legend, once Lord Vishnu was coming to visit the mortal world, then Lakshmi ji also requested him to accompany her. Then Vishnu ji said, ‘If you believe in whatever I say, then let’s go.’ Then Lakshmi ji agreed to his words and came to earth with Lord Vishnu.

After some time, after reaching a place, Lord Vishnu said to Lakshmi ji, ‘You stay here until I come, I am going towards the south, you do not come there.’ After Vishnuji’s departure, curiosity arose in Lakshmi’s mind, ‘After all, what is the secret in the south direction that I have been forbidden and God himself has gone away.

Lakshmi ji could not control herself and as soon as God moved forward, Lakshmi ji also followed him. After going a little further, she saw a mustard field in which there were many flowers. Seeing the beauty of mustard, she became mesmerized and after plucking the flowers and adorning herself, she moved ahead.

Going further, Lakshmi ji started plucking sugarcane from a sugarcane field and sucking the juice. At that very moment Vishnu ji came and seeing this, he got angry at Lakshmi ji and cursed her and said, ‘I had forbidden you to come here, but you did not agree and committed the crime of theft in the farmer’s field.

Now you serve this farmer for 12 years for this crime. Saying this, God left them and went to Kshirsagar. Then Lakshmi ji started living in that poor farmer’s house.

One day Goddess Lakshmi said to the farmer’s wife, ‘First you take bath and worship Goddess Lakshmi made by me, then cook the food, only then you will get whatever you asked for.’ The farmer’s wife did the same. Due to the effect of puja and the grace of Goddess Lakshmi, the farmer’s house was filled with food, money, gems, gold etc. from the very next day.

Lakshmi provided the farmer with wealth and grains. The farmer’s 12 years passed with great joy. Then after 12 years Lakshmi ji got ready to leave. When Vishnu ji came to take Lakshmi ji, the farmer refused to send him.

Then God said to the farmer, who lets them go, they are fickle, they don’t stay anywhere. Even the big guys couldn’t stop them. She was cursed by me, that is why she was serving you for 12 years. Your 12 years of service has been completed. The farmer said stubbornly, no! Now I will not let Lakshmiji go.

Then Lakshmiji said, ‘O farmer! If you want to stop me then do whatever I say. Tomorrow is the day, you plaster and clean the house tomorrow. Keep a ghee lamp lit at night and worship me in the evening and keep money in a copper urn for me.

I will reside in that urn. But I will not be visible to you during the puja. Lakshmi ji further said, ‘I will not leave your house for the whole year because of this one day’s worship.’ Saying this she spread in ten directions with the light of the lamps. Next day the farmer worshiped Goddess Lakshmi as per the story.

His house was filled with wealth. Since then, Lakshmiji was worshiped every year on Teras.

Why is Yamraj worshiped on Dhanteras?

According to the legend, in ancient times there was a king named Hem, who had no children. After a long time they were blessed with a son. When the horoscope of that child was made, the astrologer said that there is a possibility of his death on the tenth day of his marriage.

Hearing this, King Hem decided never to marry his son and sent him to a place where there were no women. But who can avoid destiny? The king’s son met a beautiful woman in a dense forest and both of them fell in love. Then both of them got married in Gandharva marriage.

According to the prophecy, on the tenth day of the marriage, Yamdoot came to the earth to take the life of the king. When he was taking his life, Yamdoot’s heart became sad after hearing his wife’s crying voice. When Yamdoot reached Yamraj with his life, he was very sad.

Yamraj said that it is natural to be sad but nothing comes before duty. In such a situation, Yamdoot asked Yamraj, ‘Is there any way to stop this untimely death?’ Then Yamraj said, if a person lights a lamp in the south direction at the entrance of his house in the evening on the Trayodashi of Kartik Krishna Paksha, then the chances of untimely death will be averted from his life.

Since then there is a tradition of Yam Puja on the day of Dhanteras.
