The political chessboard has started being laid for the West Bengal Assembly elections 2026. Political parties are setting electoral equations to attract voters. In this sequence, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi has formed an alliance with Humayun Kabir’s Aam Janata Unnayan Party in Bengal. Both the leaders announced the alliance on Wednesday (25 March). After this there was a press conference. Owaisi targeted TMC chief Mamata Banerjee and BJP and talked about bringing Muslim leadership forward. At the same time, TMC accused the Owaisi-Humayun alliance of being the ‘B team’ of BJP.
Owaisi on Wednesday (25 March) accused Trinamool Congress and said that TMC got Muslim votes but did nothing for them. He also said during the press conference that the people of West Bengal are feeling suffocated. His party has joined hands with Humayun Kabir’s Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP). So that the people of West Bengal can be given the political option they are waiting for.
Targeted at Mamta Banerjee
Taking aim at the Mamata Banerjee government, Owaisi said, ‘The efforts in the state for Muslims are only for show, in reality these efforts have not translated into development.’ In a questioning tone he said, ‘Around five lakh OBC certificates were cancelled. Many of these were from Muslim families. Is this not an issue? ‘The number of Muslims in the population here is about 30 percent but their representation in government jobs is only seven percent.’
Retaliated on the allegation of benefiting BJP
He claimed that his politics has indirectly helped the BJP strengthen its hold in the state. He said, ‘When did three BJP MLAs win in Bengal? In 2016 right? Now he has 77 MLAs. Did I make them win? Am I so powerful that I allowed BJP to flourish? The development of BJP is happening in front of your eyes.
Can contest elections on 182 seats
Owaisi claimed that the AIMIM and AJUP alliance is aimed at preventing exploitation of the weaker sections in the state and strengthening them. He said that this alliance will also strengthen the political leadership of Muslims in the state. Kabir had formed the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) after being suspended from the Trinamool Congress following the controversy over the proposed mosque on the style of Babri Masjid in Murshidabad district. Kabir said that the alliance is planning to contest elections on 182 seats in the 294-member assembly.
