After the cancellation of recognition of MBBS course in Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence of Jammu and Kashmir, the debate has intensified across the country. National Medical Commission (NMC) has withdrawn the recognition of MBBS from this college. The Commission says that the necessary conditions related to studies, faculty and hospital were not being fulfilled in the college. At the same time, after this decision many questions have started arising. Some people are calling it a purely technical matter, while others are linking it to the recent admission controversy.
Mata Vaishno Devi Medical College had got permission for 50 MBBS seats only last year. With this, MBBS studies started for the first time in the college. It was expected that this would strengthen medical education in Jammu region. But due to the cancellation of recognition within a year, questions have been raised on the functioning of the college. Now the biggest concern is about the students who took admission here. According to NMC, these students will be shifted to other recognized medical colleges.
Technical and educational shortcomings the reason?
According to media reports, NMC has clearly stated in its decision that the reason for cancellation of recognition is only technical and educational shortcomings. According to the commission, the college did not follow the prescribed standards related to faculty, hospital facilities and number of patients. NMC says that no compromise can be made in medical education, because it directly affects the health of patients and the future of students.
The college was already in controversies regarding admission.
This college was already in controversies even before its recognition was cancelled. After the seat allotment list of the first batch of 2025-26 was revealed, many organizations in Jammu had protested. According to the list, out of 50 seats, 42 Muslim students, 7 Hindu students and 1 Sikh student got admission. Some Hindu organizations alleged that there was discrimination in admissions and students from the Valley were given priority.
Did the admission controversy increase the strictness of the investigation?
Although NMC has denied that the decision to cancel the affiliation is related to any social or religious dispute, there is talk at the local level that the pressure of investigation had increased on the college after the admission controversy. Some people believe that due to public and political pressure, the college was investigated more strictly.
What shortcomings were found in the inspection?
The team of NMC’s Medical Assessment and Rating Board had inspected the college on January 2. Many serious shortcomings came to light in the inspection report. According to the report, the number of faculty in the college was about 39 percent less than the prescribed standard. The shortage of tutors, demonstrators and senior resident doctors was found to be about 65 percent.
The condition of the hospital was also not satisfactory. Only 182 patients were registered in the OPD till 1 pm, whereas as per the standards there should have been at least 400 patients. Bed occupancy was only 45 percent, whereas the standard is 80 percent. Even in the ICU, less than half the beds were filled.
Shortage in lab, library and operation theater also
During inspection, labs were not found in many departments. The research lab was completely empty. The lecture theater did not meet the standards of NMC. There were only 744 books in the library, whereas it is necessary to have at least 1,500 books. Only two operation theaters were operational in the hospital, whereas as per rules there should be at least five operation theatres.
