Ladakh’s famous engineer, education reformer and environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk is once again in the news. The news of his release from custody came out, after which people started knowing about his life and work again. Sonam Wangchuk is not just an engineer, but he is a person who tried to bring a big change in the society through education and innovation even in difficult circumstances. The interesting thing is that Sonam Wangchuk, who has gained recognition across the world today, was not able to go to school till the age of 9 in his childhood.

Born in a small village of Ladakh situated amidst the mountains, Wangchuk had very few facilities for education at that time, but despite the difficulties, he did not give up and later became an engineer, improved the education system and did many such experiments which are discussed at the international level. How educated is Sonam Wangchuk

Sonam Wangchuk has studied mechanical engineering. He holds a Bachelor’s degree (BE) in Mechanical Engineering from National Institute of Technology Srinagar (NIT Srinagar). Sonam Wangchuk was not able to go to school till the age of 9 due to lack of education facilities in her village. Later she was sent to Srinagar for studies, initially she had difficulty in understanding Hindi and English, but she worked hard and continued her studies. He later completed his studies in Mechanical Engineering from National Institute of Technology Srinagar. During his studies, he also supported his expenses by giving tuition to children.

What did you do after studies?

After becoming an engineer, he chose the path of education and social reform instead of job. In 1988, he founded the Students Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL), which started the work of improving the education system of the students of Ladakh. Besides, he also developed a unique technology like Ice Stupa to deal with the water problem, which gained him recognition across the world.

Sonam Wangchuk was born on 1 September 1966 in a village named Uletokpo in Ladakh. His father’s name is Sonam Wangyal and mother’s name is Tshering. At that time, facilities like school were very limited in his village. For this reason, he stayed away from formal education till the age of about 9 years. Later he was sent to Srinagar for studies. There also he had to face a lot of difficulties in the beginning. He did not know both Hindi and English languages ​​well, hence it was not easy for him to understand the studies, but he gradually overcame these challenges by working hard.

Recognition in the world through innovation

Sonam Wangchuk got the most recognition due to her unique experiments. Her most famous invention is the Ice Stupa technique. It is an artificial glacier made of ice, from which water is stored in winter and farmers get water for irrigation in summer. Due to this technology, farming became easier in many areas of Ladakh and problems like drought were relieved to a great extent.
