Diseases can also be detected through body odor, know 7 types of body odor and their hidden signs.

We all know that sweating and sometimes having a slight odor is a common thing. Most people consider it to be a problem related only to cleanliness or not applying deodorant. But do you know that a sudden change in body odor can sometimes be an early sign of some serious problem going on inside us.

According to doctors, sweat itself is odorless. The actual odor is created when there are chemical changes, hormonal fluctuations, infection or metabolic disturbances inside the body. Many clinical researches show that different body odors can sometimes indicate diseases, which are very important for us to detect in time. In such a situation, let us know 7 special smells of the body which indicate the disease.

7 types of body odor and their hidden signs

1. Smells like nail polish remover – Sometimes some people’s breath or skin smells slightly sweet, fruity or acetone like nail polish remover. Doctors link this to increased ketones in the body. This situation occurs when the body does not get sugar for energy and it starts burning fat rapidly. This is mostly seen in uncontrolled diabetes, especially diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). This odor often appears even before other serious symptoms. Therefore it is considered an early warning signal.

2. Sour or vinegar-like smell – If a pungent, sour smell like vinegar starts coming from your body, then it can be a sign of hypothyroidism. Overactive thyroid greatly speeds up the body’s metabolism, which leads to excessive sweating, heat increases in the body and the sweat starts to smell acidic. This smell becomes stronger when doing light activity. Along with this, symptoms like fast heartbeat, restlessness and weight loss without any reason can also be seen.

3. Strong smell like ammonia – If sweat starts giving off a pungent odor like ammonia, then it should not be taken lightly. This smell is often seen in people whose kidneys are not functioning properly. When the kidneys are not able to completely remove urea from the body, some part of it comes out through sweat and breaks down on the skin and creates an ammonia-like smell. Sometimes this smell also appears as an early sign of kidney disease.

4. Sweet or yeasty, bread-like smell – When there is yeast or fungal infection on the skin, a kind of sweet, stale or bread-like smell starts coming from the body. This smell is usually felt more in those places where there is more moisture, like armpits, waist, under the breasts, on the skin, this smell can persist even after bathing. This is a sign that the fungal infection present on the skin is increasing and needs treatment.

5. Smell like rotten fish – This smell is very rare, but so distinct that it cannot be ignored. This condition is called trimethylaminuria. This is a metabolic disorder. In which the body is unable to break down a chemical called trimethylamine. Its smell is like rotten fish. This smell can be felt in sweat, breath and even urine. This problem is often associated with genetic reasons or sometimes liver failure.

6. Smell like a musty, damp room or wet basement – When the liver is not able to clear toxins from the body, a strange musty, damp or earthy odor begins to occur. In medical language it is called fater hepaticus. In people suffering from heart disease, sulfur based compounds start being released through the body and breath, which creates this specific smell. This indicates that the filtering capacity of the liver is decreasing and immediate investigation is needed.

7.Metallic or very pungent smell – Certain bacteria such as Corynebacterium, Staphylococcus, and Pseudomonas convert sweat into chemicals that cause a strong, metallic, or stinging odor. This smell can be a sign of bacterial infection on the skin, infection in the wound or excessive growth of bacteria in the armpits and groin. If there is redness, pain or rash along with such smell, then investigation is necessary.
