What was the special rule on Diwali?
Bringing vegetables to the palace was completely prohibited during Diwali. The reason for this was the fear of black magic. It was believed that vegetables could be used for tantric rituals and witchcraft. The palace being the residence of the emperor and his family, strict rituals were performed to protect the women and the royal family from all evil eyes.
Peeling vegetables to ward off witchcraft
If vegetables had to be brought, there was a special ritual. Before bringing vegetables to the palace, they were thoroughly peeled. Vegetables like brinjal, radish, pumpkin and carrot were put through this process to protect them from being used in any black magic.
Restrictions on movement in the palace
Not only this, during Diwali, especially on the day of Chhoti Diwali, there was a ban on the movement of employees and attendants in the palace. No one was allowed to go out or come inside the palace. Because it was believed that this was a way to protect the palace from any outside influence or magical intrusion. Not only superstition but because of these rules, order and control was also maintained inside the royal palace. With Diwali being a festival of prosperity and light, there was a time when these rituals were taken very seriously. In that era, many rules and customs were influenced by a combination of religion, culture and superstition.
There was no single rule banning vegetables. In fact, the Mughals had special rules for different festivals including Diwali. This ensured how the palace would be decorated, what food would be served and what rituals would be followed.
