Delhi’s Nutrition Expert Neha Bansal advises parents to avoid or give less foods that can have a negative effect on the physical and metabolic growth of children. Here we are telling you about 5 such common foods, which experts refuse to feed the children and also tell science based regions behind it.
- Sweet curd or flavored yogurt: Plain yogurt is very good, but the flavored yogurts made for children often contain very much sugar, artificial color etc. These make it less healthy food and more sweets. Children should not take more than 25 grams of extra sugar a day. In many fruit yogurts, one serving can have up to 20 grams of sugar. Instead, choose plain yogurt and mix fresh fruits at home.
- Processed Meet: Hot dogs, bacon and packet cold cuts have become common in children’s food, but, they usually have very high preservatives like sodium, nitrates and unhealthy saturated fats. Eating them continuously can increase the risk of increasing high blood pressure and cholesterol in the child’s teenage. In this way, grilled chicken, eggs, pulses or fish can be selected for protein.
- Ultra-prosely snacks: Microwave popcorn such as ultra-processed snacks may look tasty, but many brands are filled with sodium, artificial flavors and unhealthy fats. They fall in the category of ultra-prostitution foods, whose link is with poor heart health. Research suggests that diet rich in these foods is related to swelling, increasing weight and increase in cholesterol levels. Air popped popcorn or at least processed snacks are more healthy options.
- Serials and soft drinks: Many breakfast serials available in the market for children are very refined and full of sugar. Similarly, sugar with soda and fruit-flavored drinks destabilize blood sugar, reduces energy and contribute to long growing forests. The CDC says that these drinks are a big source of extra sugar in children’s diet and can cause insulin resistance in childhood. Instead, give whole grains like oatmeal and feed water or without sugar instead of sweet drinks.
- Fried Foods: Frying snacks and fast foods such as chips and nuggets often have more trans fat and calories, but the essential nutrients are less. Even if your children like them, they promote unhealthy food habits and are often eaten for fun or emotional comfort instead of hunger. Research suggests that there is a relationship between frequent intake of fried foods and increased bad cholesterol and inflammation among the youth. Avoid fried foods and choose baked options.
