According to the rules, demanding money in the name of passport verification is completely illegal. Asking or taking bribe comes under the ambit of Section 173 of the Indian Justice Code (BNS). At the same time, giving bribe is still considered a crime and action can be taken under Section 8 of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1988. That means asking for money is a crime as well as giving it.
