According to religious traditions in Hinduism, night time is considered to be the time of worship of Gods and Goddesses, rest and peace. According to the scriptures, after sunset the movement of the gods calms down and the flow of negative powers increases. In such a situation, washing clothes at night is considered inauspicious in household chores, because doing it disrupts the sattvikta and positive energy of the house. Washing clothes at night is prohibited in Grihyasutras and some religious texts.
According to astrological point of view, the effectiveness of the Moon increases at night. Moon is considered to be the factor of mind and water. According to beliefs, doing work related to excessive water at night can lead to mental instability, restlessness and unnecessary stress. Although it is related to faith but is not certified.
According to the scriptures, the most auspicious time to do household work is Abhijeetkaal and Brahmamuhurta. In many scriptures including Manusmriti, night time has been mentioned for mental peace and family discussions. Washing clothes at night is also inauspicious because this action is considered to be related to Tamasic category.
From a religious point of view, it is also said that washing clothes at night makes Goddess Lakshmi angry. The reason is that, in old times, filling water at night and washing and drying clothes was considered unsafe. With the passage of time, the earlier precautions started being counted as auspicious and inauspicious.
Many religious pundits also argue that excessive use of water at night can lead to negative energy of Chandra Dosh and Rahu Ketu. However, such claims are not directly visible in the scriptures and Puranas.
In reality, with changing times, washing clothes at night is inauspicious, hardly anyone believes such things, but from religious and cultural point of view its importance still remains. However, work like washing clothes should be avoided at night.
