Why does a hump of the neck become?

According to the expert, a slight curvature is normal in our spinal cord. But if this inclination exceeds 45 degrees, then the problem can start. Many times it looks just as a bulge, but some people also feel back pain, muscle tightness, fatigue and pain near the spine. Dr. Abhijeet Pawar (Spine Specialist, Mumbai) told BBC that the biggest reason for this is to sit in the wrong way. Watching mobiles for hours, working on the computer for a long time and using the phone down the head. These habits pressurize the neck muscles and gradually the fat and bone rise under the neck.

What else can be the reasons?

  • Lifting heavy bags – pressurizes the shoulders and back.
  • Bones weakness (osteoporosis) – increases the risk of injury on the spinal cord.
  • Obesity – Puts extra stress on the spine.
  • Hormonal and medical reasons – such as PCOS, long -term steroids use or genetic problems.
  • Increasing age – This problem is common in the elderly due to weakness of bones.

Dr. Agnivesh Tikku (Spine Surgeon, Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai) told in a conversation with BBC that it is also called “Buffalo Humps” and it is especially visible among those who sit for a long time and use mobile-laptops more. Sitting continuously makes the balance of neck muscles deteriorate and fat starts to freeze there.

Is it dangerous?

In the beginning, it can only seem to have a problem of appearance. But if not paying attention to time, it can spoil the texture of the spine and can cause prolonged pain. If it increases a lot, then treatment is required.

How to avoid this?

  • Always make a habit of sitting straight and maintaining the right posture.
  • Wake up every 30-40 minutes and walk for a while.
  • Do not pick up very heavy bags.
  • Take care of calcium and vitamin D for bone health.
