How Many Doctors Per Person In India: The number of diseases and patients is increasing rapidly all over the world. Some time ago there was a report that the antibiotic medicine which used to work easily earlier, has now also reduced its effect. In such a situation, adequate doctors are needed to stop the increasing number of patients. But the new figures released by the government have once again revealed the huge shortage of doctors in the country.
According to the information given in Parliament on Tuesday, there is only one doctor available for 811 people in India. While giving a written reply to the question asked in Rajya Sabha, Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda said that 13,88,185 allopathic doctors are registered in the country, while 7,51,768 doctors of AYUSH system are registered.
What did the Union Health Minister say?
He said that if it is considered that only 80 percent of both allopathic and AYUSH doctors are actively available, then the doctor-population ratio in the country comes to 1:811.
Nadda said that there has been a huge expansion in the field of medical education in the last few years. In comparison to 2014, today the number of medical colleges has increased from 387 to 818. MBBS seats have increased from 51,348 to 1,28,875 and PG seats have increased from 31,185 to 82,059.
Necessary steps for availability of doctors
The Health Minister said that the government has taken several steps to increase the availability of doctors in rural, backward and tribal areas. Under the central scheme, out of 157 new medical colleges attached to district hospitals, 137 have already been started. Apart from this, Family Adoption Program has been made a part of MBBS course.
Under this, medical colleges adopt villages and MBBS students regularly monitor the families living in these villages. Through this, continuous follow-up is done in matters like vaccination, nutrition, necessary steps for periods, iron-folic acid supplements, healthy lifestyle, malaria, dengue control and adherence to medication rules. Nadda said that with this, information about government health schemes can also be easily accessible to the people.
deployment of PG students
Under the District Residency Program of NMC, second and third year PG students of medical colleges are being posted in district hospitals. Facilities like hard-area allowance and government accommodation have also been provided for expert doctors working in rural and remote areas.
The minister also said that the new NMC rules allow foreign doctors to work in India for temporary registration and under special circumstances such as training, research, fellowship, voluntary service or super-specialty programmes.
