We all know that sunscreen protects our skin from the strong and harmful rays of the sun. But ever you have come to your mind that can be reduced by applying sunscreen daily in your body? Actually, vitamin D is called ‘vitamin of sunlight’, because it is made in our body when sunlight falls on our skin. This vitamin makes our bones strong and is very important for our health. So can applying sunscreen cause vitamin D deficiency? Let us know what is the truth and how you can get vitamin D even after being safe in the sun.
How does the body make vitamin D?
When sunlight, especially UVB rays (Parabanonic B rays) fall on our skin, our body itself starts making vitamin D. This is a very natural way that gives us vitamin D. But some people think that if we apply sunscreen, which prevents the rays of the sun from reaching our skin, then perhaps our body will not be able to make vitamin D. This can cause vitamin D deficiency.
Does sunscreen really stop becoming vitamin D?
According to some research, if a person applies a lot of SPF sunscreen properly and well on every body part, then it can stop the UVB rays of the sun. These UVB rays help in making vitamin D in our skin. Therefore, doing so may reduce vitamin D.
But most people in real life do not apply sunscreen so well. People never apply sunskrin on the whole body every day and also put very thin layers on the face. For this reason, a little UVB rays reach the skin even after applying sunscreen and vitamin D keeps formed.
In a study published in the British Journal of Dermatology, it was also found that even though people apply high SPF sunscreen, the essential vitamin D is formed in their body. This means that sunscreen stops the rays of the sun a little, but do not stop becoming vitamin D completely.
How to make balance between sunscreen and vitamin D?
It is very easy to make balance between both things. If you feel that there may be deficiency of vitamin D in your body, then there is no need to stop applying sunscreen. You can spend a little time (about 10 to 15 minutes) in the morning without applying sunscreen in the morning sunscreen. Morning time is good because then the rays of the sun are not very fast and your skin is safe.
Also, include foods rich in vitamin D in your food. If you still feel that there is a shortage of vitamin D in the body, then you can talk to a doctor and take supplements.
How to increase vitamin D in the body?
Apart from sunlight, you can also take vitamin D by adding some foods to your diet. Vitamin D is found in some foods like eggs, fatty fish (such as salmon), milk and grains. Apart from this, many people also take vitamin D pills or supplements so that their body can get the required amount of vitamin D.
