Cow’s milk is rich in nutrients and most people consider it healthy. But a question has been arising for many years. Can the protein present in cow’s milk increase the risk of type-1 diabetes in young children? Some research has expressed this possibility, while no concrete evidence was found in many studies.

Dr. Gulnaz Sheikh, Chief Dietician of Kims Hospital, Thane, told the media that, “Some research suggests that the protein of cow’s milk can activate the immune system in some children in such a way that he accidentally attacks the cells that make insulin. But the research is not completely clear yet.”

How can the protein of cow’s milk affect the body?

Cow milk mainly contains two types of proteins. Conscience and WHE. These are safe for most people. But those who have special genetic traits or whose immune system is more sensitive, these proteins can cause immune reaction. In type-1 diabetes, the body’s immune system destroys the cells that make insulin of the pancreas. There can be many reasons for this. Such as Perry History, Environment, or viral infection. Some experts believe that giving cow’s milk or protein to very young children quickly, some children can work as a trigger in some children.

What should be kept in mind?

This danger is more important for those children who are given cow’s milk or milk-based formula before the stomach and immune system is fully developed. According to Dr. Sheikh, “That is why it is advisable to give mother’s milk for the first six months. It can reduce the risk of many health problems and strengthen the child’s immunity.”

For older children and adults

In older children and adults, if milk is consumed in balanced amounts, then it is not at risk of type-1 diabetes. Unless they have allergies from milk or lactose intensity.

How much milk can be more?

There is no fixed limit of protein of cow’s milk. It depends on every person. It is generally safe for healthy adults to take one or two glasses of milk (or in the same amount of yogurt or cheese) a day. Drinking too much milk will not do many big glasses of diabetes every day, but can do other damage like weight gain, stomach problems, or more saturated fat in diet. Cow’s milk is still healthy for most children and adults, as it contains calcium, protein, vitamins and other nutrients. But like everything, it is right to take it in balanced quantity. Parents should take care of when and how children are being given milk, especially in the early months of life.
