Many dangerous incidents of dog bites are coming out from different parts of the country. In many cases, people have suffered serious injuries and some have lost their lives. Especially in large areas like Delhi-NCR, the number of stray dogs has increased rapidly, due to which the common people are facing a lot of trouble. For this reason, the Supreme Court has taken a tough stance and ordered the Delhi government and other local authorities to remove stray dogs from the roads as soon as possible to the shelter home. The court has also said that if someone hinders this work, strict action will be taken against it.
After this decision, protests have also been seen from Animal Lovers and Animal Welfare Volunteers in many places. During this time a statement of Maneka Gandhi’s sister and animal rights activist Ambika Shukla came out in which she said that rabies is a very delicate virus, which can be eliminated only by washing with soap and water. Now the question arises whether washing with soap is really enough to protect it from rabies or after that more treatment is required. So let’s know whether washing with soap can protect rabies.
Can rabies be avoided only by washing with soap?
To avoid rabies on dog bites, washing with soap is not enough. This is definitely an essential first step, but not a complete cure. According to WHO and health experts, if an animal has bitten, especially an animal that is suspicious or who can be rabbed, then the wound should be washed thoroughly with soap and flowing water for at least 10-15 minutes. By doing this, the viruses, bacteria and dirt on the surface of the wound can be quite clear, but keep in mind that it is just an initial first aid, it does not provide protection from rabies completely. After washing the wound, you have to meet a doctor immediately.
What a dangerous disease is rabies?
Rabies is a deadly disease. This is a virus that slowly affects the brain by reaching the human body due to the bite of an infected animal. Once the symptoms of rabies start, then it becomes impossible to treat and in most cases death occurs. According to WHO, every year thousands of people around the world die of rabies, of which most cases are from India. Every year about 18,000 to 20,000 deaths in India occur from rabies, which is more than 36 percent of the total deaths due to rabies in the world. The biggest threat to rabies, young children, people living in rural areas and people who live more with animals or handle them.
What to do if the dog bites?
WHO explains 3 levels of animal bites. In which the first is not just touching the animal or staying near it, there is no need for any treatment in it. After this, wash the wound on a mild injury by licking another scratch or animal and apply the vaccine immediately. Wash for at least 15 minutes with soap and water. It reduces the number of viruses. Apply antiseptic, such as datol, sevelon, or any Iodine an antiseptic. As soon as possible, see the doctor.
