India Urea Import Surge: Due to decline in domestic production, India’s urea import has more than doubled to 71.7 lakh tonnes in the first eight months of the current financial year 2025-26. Which shows the country’s increasing dependence on foreign supplies to meet the demand of farmers.
According to data released by the Fertilizer Association of India (FAI), urea imports increased by 120.3 percent to 71.7 lakh tonnes during April-November 2024-25 compared to 32.6 lakh tonnes in the same period last year.
What do the statistics say?
According to the data, domestic urea production declined by 3.7 percent to 19.7 million tonnes between April 2025 and November 2025. Total urea sales increased by 2.3 percent to 25.4 million tonnes. FAI Chairman S. However, we have achieved sales growth through coordinated planning, Shankar Subramaniam said in a statement. But the significant dependence on imports shows the importance of strategic supply chain management.
Urea import increased by 68.4 percent to 131 million tonnes in the month of November. Whereas in November 2024 it was 7.8 lakh tonnes. Urea sales increased by 4.8 percent to 37.5 lakh tonnes in the month of November compared to last year.
Dependence on imports of another important soil nutrient, di-ammonium phosphate (DAP), is also increasing. Import of DAP now accounts for 67 percent of the total supply which was 56 percent last year. Its sales remained stable at 71.2 lakh tonnes during April-November of the financial year 2025-26. Domestic DAP production declined by 5.2 percent to 26.8 lakh tonnes.
What did the FAI Director General say?
FAI Director General Dr. Suresh Kumar Chaudhary said that two important things have come to light in these figures. First, he said, is a structural shift towards import-based supply management for nitrogen and phosphate nutrients.
Second, there is strong performance of indigenous phosphate fertilizers like SSP. Whose sales have increased by 15 percent. Chaudhary said, this is a sign of a balanced approach. We are ensuring the availability of essential nutrients by importing them under the prescribed plan.
