America’s President Donald Trump has once again created a stir in international politics with his statement. This time he has targeted Canada and said that if Canada moves closer to China by staying away from US-backed security schemes, then China will swallow it within a year. This statement of Trump has come after Canada opposed his proposed ‘Golden Dome’ missile defense project.
Donald Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social that Canada is opposing the construction of the Golden Dome over Greenland, even though this project would also protect Canada. He alleged that instead Canada has given priority to trade with China. Trump said in a warning tone that China will destroy Canada in the very first year.
Tension in relations between America and Canada
This statement has come at a time when tension seems to be increasing in the relations between America and Canada. Recently, while speaking on global politics at the World Economic Forum meeting, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney had said that the world has now entered the era of competition between big countries and the rule-based system is weakening. He also indirectly opposed America’s tariff policy and pressure politics.
Mark Carney targeted
Donald Trump, in his speech in Davos, had targeted Mark Carney and said that Canada should be grateful to America. According to Trump, America provides many facilities like security to Canada for free. He even said that Canada is safe only because of America and it should remember this.
Growing closerness between Canada and China
Meanwhile, the growing closeness between Canada and China is irritating America even more. On January 17, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a new trade agreement with China. Under this agreement, Canada is said to get new export markets worth about $7 billion. The Canadian government says it wants to diversify its trading partners in an uncertain global environment and China can play an important role in this. Under this agreement, Canada has agreed to reduce 100 percent tariff on Chinese electric vehicles, while in return China will reduce the tariff on Canadian agricultural products, especially canola seeds, from 84 percent to about 15 percent. Additionally, a limit has also been set on the number of electric vehicles coming from China to Canada.
America in tension due to Mark Carney’s statement
Mark Carney even said that in the current situation, China has emerged as a more reliable trading partner than America. His statement has further increased Washington’s concern. Currently, Canada also faces US tariffs, which include 50 percent duty on metals and 25 percent duty on non-American cars.
