In an interview to Fox News on Friday (May 16, 2025), Donald Trump said that India is the top exam in a country where there are obstacles, which he is determined to end. He said, “They make business almost impossible. Do you know that they are willing to cut their tariffs 100% for the United States?”

‘There is no haste to finalize the deal’

But Trump also gave a mix signal on how close the deal could be, he said, “This will happen soon. I am in no hurry. See, everyone wants to deal with us.” He said that he is not planning to compromise with everyone. Earlier, Trump had said that he is planning to set new import duty rates for business partners in the next two to three weeks.

What did India say?

Speaking to reporters, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said, “Trade talks are going on between India and America. This is a complex conversation. Nothing is decided until everything is fixed. Any business deal should be mutually beneficial; it should work for both countries. This will be a hurry from the business deal. Any decision will be made on it.”
