The alleged gang rape of a second year medical student near a private medical college in Durgapur, West Bengal has created huge anger and political storm in the entire state. As soon as this matter came to light, the police immediately started action and arrested the accused.
1. Police did crime scene reconstruction on Tuesday. Meanwhile, all the five accused in the case were arrested, one of whom was arrested with the help of his sister.
2This incident has increased the prompt action of Mamata Banerjee government in this matter and the monitoring of both the ruling party and the opposition regarding law and order. Political parties have started raising questions on the government regarding the matter and demands are being made to ensure justice.
3. Police sources said that accused Shafiq Shaikh was arrested with the help of his sister Rozina Shaikh. Rozina told that she handed over her brother to the law so that the family does not have to face embarrassment due to his actions. Police caught him from under Andal Bridge in Durgapur, where he was hiding.
4. India Today has obtained the statement of the victim, which she gave in front of the doctor. He said, “I saw that some people were moving towards us. We ran towards the forest, but three people ran after us, caught hold of me and took me into the forest.”
5. The victim further said, “They grabbed me from behind, snatched my phone and told me to call a friend. When he did not come, they forced me to the ground. When I screamed, they said that if I made any noise, more people would come and do the same.”
6. This 23 year old student is a resident of Jaleshwar, Odisha. She had gone to dinner with her friend on Friday night. Then some people stopped him and molested him.
7. According to West Bengal Police, all the accused will be taken to the crime scene and crime scene reconstruction will be done. The attack took place near the college gate, near the forest of Paranganj Kali Bari cremation ground. A senior official said that this reconstruction is being done to confirm the statement of the victim and to understand the events related to the attack.
8. After the incident, anger and political controversy intensified in the state. The victim’s father compared the situation in Bengal to the rule of Aurangzeb. He said, “My daughter’s life first, career second. I want to take her back to Odisha.”
9. This reaction came after the controversial statement of CM Mamata Banerjee, in which she had said that “female students should not go out late at night.” At the same time, Governor CV Anand Bose stressed the need for a second renaissance to ensure the safety of women.
