Strong earthquake tremors were felt in Assam in the early hours of Monday (January 5, 2026). According to the National Center for Seismology, the epicenter of the earthquake was in Morigaon district of Assam. Its intensity has been measured at 5.1 on the Richter scale. Apart from Assam, strong earthquake tremors were felt in many states located in the North-East, due to which people got scared and came out of their homes. This earthquake occurred at around 4:17 in the morning, when most of the people were in deep sleep.
Apart from Assam, the impact of earthquake was also seen in Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and other areas of North-East India. The epicenter of the earthquake was about 50 kilometers below the ground, due to which the tremors were felt far and wide. Light tremors were felt in some areas and strong tremors were felt in some places.
Good news for now, no damage
The good thing is that till now there has been no news of any injury or major damage due to this earthquake. Administration and disaster management departments are keeping an eye on the situation. Information is being continuously collected from sensitive areas so that any emergency situation can be dealt with.
Appeal to be cautious
The administration has appealed to the people not to pay attention to rumors and remain alert. Experts say that people living in earthquake prone areas should always be careful and follow safety instructions.
Assam in earthquake-sensitive areas
The history of Assam has been associated with horrific incidents of earthquake. This area is counted among the most earthquake-sensitive areas of the country. The biggest reason for this is the collision of the Indian Plate and the Eurasian Plate. Due to this collision, there are repeated movements under the ground and strong tremors are felt.

The Shillong earthquake that occurred on 12 June 1897 proved to be a terrible disaster for Assam and the entire North-East India. The intensity of this earthquake was measured more than 8. Thousands of people were affected by it and a large number of houses, roads and buildings collapsed. The impact of this earthquake was so widespread that traces of devastation were visible in cities as far away as Calcutta.
