Pakistan Earthquake: There was an earthquake of 5.9 magnitude in Pakistan on Saturday, but no loss of life and property has been reported so far. According to the National Earthquaking Monitoring Center, the earthquake was in a depth of 94 km near the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border region. The earthquake was recorded at 11:47 am.
Earthquake tremors were felt in a large area of Pakistan, including various parts of Islamabad, Lahore, Peshawar, Rawalpindi and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The most powerful tremors of earthquake were felt in the lower Dir, Bajaur, Malkand, Naushera, Dir Bala, Shabakdar and Mohammed regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, causing widespread panic among the residents. So far, there has been no news of loss of life and property from anywhere.
Shocks felt up to Jammu and Kashmir
News agency ANI shared a video showing the impact of the earthquake felt in many parts of Jammu and Kashmir. Recalling the moment, a man from Srinagar said, “I felt it clearly. I was at work when suddenly my chair started moving.” A user posted on the social media platform X, “A powerful earthquake has just occurred in Kashmir – it was suddenly and intense. It has really shaken us. Hopefully everyone will be safe.”
2005 earthquake caused havoc
This was a second earthquake in a week after an earthquake of 5.5 magnitude in Pakistan’s capital and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and parts of Punjab provinces last Saturday. There are often earthquakes of different intensity in Pakistan. The most deadly earthquake occurred in 2005, killing more than 74,000 people. According to the United Nations Office (UNOCHA) for the coordination of human affairs, Afghanistan remains highly sensitive to natural disasters including seasonal floods, landslides and earthquakes.
