The earth trembled once again in Afghanistan in the early hours of Friday. The intensity of the earthquake measured 4.2 on the Richter scale. According to the National Center for Sismology (NCS), the earthquake was recorded today on 19 July 2025 at 02:11 pm.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located at 36.28 degrees northern latitude and 71.26 degrees east longitude. Its depth has been stated to be 125 kilometers. Earthquake tremors caused panic among the people and in many areas people came out of the houses. Afghanistan is considered to be a highly-sensitive area from the seismic perspective, where medium and sharp intensity earthquakes continue to occur from time to time.

How does an earthquake come?

Actually, there are very large rocks under the earth which are called tectonic plates. These plates continue to move very slowly. When these plates collide with each other, slip or are separated, the energy accumulated between them suddenly comes out. This makes the earth move and we feel it as an earthquake.

Earthquake can also have other causes. For example, human activities like volcanic bursting, large dams or mining and breakdown of mountains i.e. landslides. The Richter scale is used to measure how strong the earthquake was. It is estimated on the scale of 1 to 10.

The Himalayan areas, especially in India, are considered to be the most earthquake affected, because two big plates- Indian plates and Eurasian plates are colliding there. For this reason, earthquakes often occur in North India and North-Eastern states.
