Daily Egg Consumption Safety: There is a saying that eat eggs every day on Sunday or Monday. Well, now this saying has become old, because now questions have started being raised regarding eggs. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has taken strict action after the controversy over the quality of the same eggs, which were earlier eaten to their heart’s content for protein. On Monday, FSSAI directed its regional offices across the country to collect samples of branded and unbranded eggs and send them to 10 accredited labs for testing. These samples will be specifically tested for the presence of nitrofurans.
This action has been taken after questions were raised regarding the quality of eggs of egg brand Eggos. Reports claimed that these eggs may contain traces of nitrofurans. Nitrofurans are a group of antibiotics whose use is completely banned in food-producing animals. Health officials say that if these medicines are used illegally in poultry farming, their residues can reach the eggs. Due to this apprehension, a decision was taken to conduct sampling across the country.
Question on quality of eggs
This matter came to light when questions were raised on the quality of eggs in an online report. After this, the issue became a part of social media and public debate and the monitoring of regulatory agencies increased. As the controversy escalated, Eggos issued a clarification calling its products safe. “As we promised, our latest lab test reports from December 25 are now available and we are sharing them publicly for everyone’s reference. Consumer safety and trust is of the utmost importance to us and we will continue to adhere to the highest standards in our forms and processes,” the company said in a statement on Twitter.
What do experts say?
However, medical experts say the problem of misuse of antibiotics in the poultry sector still remains a serious public health concern. Dr. Janith Lovvanshi has uploaded a video on social media regarding this, in which she told that if you want to take a new risk, then you can try local eggs.
Many other experts say that nitrofurans have been banned worldwide because their residues can persist in eggs even after cooking. He said that studies conducted on animals have indicated genetic damage and increased risk of cancer due to long-term consumption of such contaminated eggs. Apart from this, it can also cause damage to liver and kidney.
