Election Commission had sent SIR notice to Ex Navy Chief, EC had to give clarification on Admiral Arun Prakash’s post

The Election Commission recently sent a notice to former Navy Chief Admiral Arun Prakash (retd) under Special Intensive Revision (SIR), in which he was asked to prove the identity of himself and his wife. Now the Election Commission gave a clarification regarding this on Monday (January 12, 2026), in which it has been said that the mandatory details related to the previous SIR were not included in their calculation form.

was called to establish identity

The Election Commission had called Arun Prakash, who has been living in Goa since retirement, to establish his identity under the SIR process. Many people, including retired armed forces personnel, had expressed concern on social media over such a notice being sent to Prakash. Arun Prakash was awarded the Vir Chakra for his role in the India-Pakistan war of 1971.

In a clarification issued on Monday, Electoral Registration Officer Dr Medora Ermomila de Costa said, ‘With reference to the media reports related to the notice issued during the SIR, it is clarified that during the SIR, the Booth Level Officer (BLO) of Part No. 43 of Cortalim Assembly Constituency had submitted the calculation form related to Shri Arun Prakash.’

Why was notice sent to former Navy Chief Admiral?

He said, ‘It was observed that the said calculation form did not contain the mandatory details related to the previous SIR, which include name of voter, EPIC number, name of relative, name and number of assembly constituency, part number and serial number in the voter list.’

The official said that in the absence of these necessary identification details, the ‘BLO application’ was unable to establish automatic connection between the submitted enumeration form and the existing voter list database. The clarification said, ‘Since all the information related to the previous SIR was not given, the system classified the calculation form under the unmapped category.’

Admiral Arun Prakash’s reply to ECI’s notice

Former Navy Chief Arun Prakash posted on X and said, ‘I neither need any special facility nor have I ever made any such demand after retiring 20 years ago. My wife and I had filled the SIR form as required and was happy to see our names in the draft voter list of Goa on the Election Commission website. However, we will follow the notice of the Election Commission.

‘Verification is mandatory under the SIR process’

D’Costa said, ‘The BLO application has been designed in such a way that it automatically matches the calculation form only when the prescribed identification details are duly filled, thereby enabling verification with the existing voter list. If the calculation forms do not match, further verification through the hearing mechanism under the SIR process is mandatory.

De Costa said that as per the standard, system-based process, the hearing notice was automatically generated and issued to ensure fair opportunity for verification of voter details and confirmation of eligibility.
