Why Europeans Tolerate Alcohol Better Than Indians: The relationship between humans and alcohol has not always been simple. Culture, social habits and body structure all play a role in this. Many of us consume alcohol in limited quantities, but a large population in the country is suffering from the problem of fatty liver. The question often arises that Europeans drink more alcohol than us, yet why do they have less problems with it? Dr. Harsh Vyas has shared an interesting information on this subject.

In a video shared on Instagram, he showed a comparison of liver ultrasound reports of a 37-year-old Italian and a 37-year-old Indian man. The surprising thing was that the European man who drank alcohol two-three times a week, his liver appeared to be more healthy, whereas the Indian man who did not drink alcohol, still showed fatty changes in his liver. According to Dr. Vyas, there could be many reasons behind this. The first reason is genetics, he said, adding that Europeans have better activity of alcohol-breaking enzymes, alcohol dehydrogenase and aldehyde dehydrogenase. This means that the toxic elements produced by alcohol are quickly eliminated from their body. Whereas in Asian population these enzymes are not as effective, due to which these harmful elements can remain in the body for a longer time and are released slowly.
Lifestyle also plays an important role
The second big reason is food. The European diet includes complex carbohydrates, healthy fats in the form of fish and seafood, olive oil and adequate protein. That means their food is balanced and full of nutrition. In comparison, the Indian diet is often high in refined carbohydrates, while relatively low in healthy fats and proteins. This difference can affect liver health. The third important aspect is physical activity. The doctor told that his Italian patient used to walk 5 to 6 kilometers every day and apart from this he also used to exercise for 30 to 40 minutes. At the same time, a large number of people in India are not able to do regular exercise and even walking 5 kilometers daily becomes difficult.
Dr. Vyas says that even though Europeans drink alcohol, their lifestyle is balanced and active. Better diet, regular exercise and favorable genetic factors together help in repairing the damage done to the body. Whereas if the lifestyle is unbalanced, then even without alcohol, liver related problems can increase.
