Fatty liver may sound like a minor problem, but the reality is much more dangerous than this. This disease begins with gradual accumulation of fat in the liver and over time can damage one of the most vital organs of the body. It is a matter of concern that cases of fatty liver are increasing rapidly in India. But this is still not being discussed as much as it should be. In fact, till a few years ago, fatty liver was linked only to excessive drinking, but now the picture has changed. Today, long office hours, working while sitting for hours, processed and sweet food, less physical activity and constant stress are becoming the major causes of this disease. According to doctors, now a large number of patients are suffering from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Which is now called Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease.
Every third Indian is affected by fatty liver
According to experts, fatty liver has taken the form of an epidemic in India. Research shows that almost every third adult in the country is suffering from this disease. This figure is more than 50 percent in urban areas and people suffering from diabetes or obesity. The surprising thing is that many people who appear slim and fit are also victims of fatty liver.
Why are symptoms of fatty liver not visible?
Fatty liver is called a silent disease because its symptoms are not visible in its initial stage. Actually, the liver does not have the ability to feel pain, so the body does not give any warning until there is considerable damage. At the same time, experts say that sometimes liver enzyme tests are normal even when fat has accumulated inside. When symptoms like fatigue, heaviness in the upper abdomen or weight loss appear, the disease has already progressed. Apart from this, fatty liver is not a disease of obese people only. Especially in Indians, despite having normal BMI, fat around the stomach and insulin resistance are the major causes of fatty liver. Women suffering from PCOS, sleep related problems, people who work sitting for long hours and employees working in IT sector are also at greater risk.
Diet habits also spoil the liver
According to doctors, some eating and drinking habits silently harm the liver. These habits include drinks and packaged juices. Apart from this, excessive refined carbohydrates like flour and white rice, ultra processed food, lack of protein, sitting for hours and lack of exercise, all these habits accelerate the process of fat accumulation in the liver.
How to keep liver safe?
Experts say that no solid scientific evidence has been found to cure fatty liver with detox drinks and supplements. On the contrary, some supplements can cause further damage to the liver. Experts believe that its real treatment is balanced diet, regular exercise, control of weight and stress. Apart from this, to keep the liver safe, focus on reducing fat and saving muscles rather than losing weight, do strength training 2-3 days a week and take enough protein in every meal.
