The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to conduct two board examinations for class 10th students from the year 2026. This change is being made under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Many questions are arising in the minds of students, parents and schools regarding this new system. CBSE Controller of Examinations Sanyam Bhardwaj has given clear information on these questions.
According to the report of Indian Express, class 10 board exam will be held in two phases. The first examination will be conducted from 17 February to 9 March 2026. The second examination will be held between 15 May to 1 June 2026. Both the exams will be based on the same syllabus. That means there will be no separate syllabus for the second exam.
First exam for all students
CBSE has made it clear that it will be necessary for all students to appear in the first board examination. This examination will be considered main. The second exam will be held only for those students who want to improve their marks. The board has advised students not to take the first exam lightly and not to think that the second exam is as a backup.
Is it necessary to take another exam?
The second board exam will be completely optional. This means that if students want, they should not give the second exam. If a student feels that his/her marks in the first examination are good, then he/she will not need to appear for the examination again. If the student appears for another exam, then the one in which he scores more marks will be added to the final result.
Special advice given to parents
CBSE has also appealed to the parents not to put pressure on their children to take the second examination. If there is no need for improvement, the child should not be forced to appear for the examination again.
In how many subjects can I give the exam again?
Under the new system, students can take the second examination in maximum three subjects. That is, if a student feels that he has to improve his marks in one, two or three subjects, then he can re-appear in the examination of the same subjects. This facility will be for all subjects and will not be limited to any particular subject.
What will happen if you fail in the first exam?
If a student fails in two subjects in the first examination, he will be placed in compartment category. Such students will be able to appear in the second examination and will get a chance to pass.
But if a student fails in three or more subjects, or does not appear in the examination at all, then he will not be allowed to take the second examination. Such students will have to appear for the main board examination again in the year 2027.
Will the syllabus change for the second exam?
CBSE has given a completely clear answer on this question also. There will be no change in the syllabus for the second examination. The same syllabus which will be for the first examination will be applicable for the second examination also. With this, students will not have to bear the burden of additional preparation.
Sports and relief to students with special needs
CBSE has said that students participating in sports and children with special needs (CWSN) will be provided the same facilities in both the examinations as before. These facilities will be as per the existing policies of CBSE, so that no student is harmed.
Why was the system of two examinations introduced?
CBSE believes that this system will reduce the examination pressure on students. If for some reason the first time performance is not good, the student will get another chance to improve. This will reduce fear among children and they will be able to take exams with confidence.
